With Memorial Day weekend approaching, what fun water activities are available near my FAMU apartment?

Memorial Day is coming soon, and in Florida, many think of it as the start of summer, although the official first day of summer is not until June 20th. Summer in Florida means hot days, and we need to find activities to help cool us off. We compiled a list of fun water activities around your FAMU apartment.

If you plan to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University throughout the summer, a pool at your apartment is a much appreciated if not considered an actual necessity to many. FAMU apartment pools come in all shapes and sizes, including resort-style pools and some that include an apartment picnic area or community BBQ grill, all perfect for Memorial Day weekend. College Club Townhomes is located within walking distance to the FAMU campus in the southwest part of Tallahassee and offers all the features above.

Suppose you want to find something near your apartment other than your own apartment pool, the city of Tallahassee offers many options for swimming, including the Jack McLean Aquatics Center, Wade Wehunt Pool, or Walker-Ford Pool. At this time, the pools are temporarily closed but check the city's website for opening dates and covid-safety protocols. If you have kids, a splash pad is always fun. The Imagination Fountain located inside Cascades Park in downtown Tallahassee is the perfect way to cool down and burn off some energy for the long holiday weekend.

If you want to take a day trip outside of Tallahassee check out some of the springs and rivers the area offers. Madison Blue Spring State Park is located east of town off of I-10 in the town of Lee, which includes a spring pool and spring-run into the Withlacoochee River. South of the city you will find Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park where you can swim in the springs or take a ride on their boat tour. Or travel northwest to Marianna for a trip down the Chipola River in a tube, kayak, canoe, and swim along the way with Bear Paw Adventures.

Last but certainly not least, and probably what most people think of when they think of Florida, is a trip to the beach, and Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to take a trip there. Panama City and the gulf coast of Florida await to the south and west of Tallahassee or travel east for Jacksonville Beach or St Augustine. All are popular beach destinations for Floridians, and many tourists from other states, so plan ahead.

As you attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, we hope you enjoy the time at your Tallahassee apartment and have time to cool off, especially during the Memorial Day weekend coming up at the end of May. Whether you end up at your FAMU apartment pool, a city pool, or local splash pad, springs, river, or the beach, stay safe and have fun!
