Is my Tallahassee apartment actually worth the price?

Rent can feel like a punch in the wallet — especially in a college town where prices move fast. The good news: "worth it" isn't just about the number on the lease. It's about what you're getting (and what you're quietly paying extra for).

Step 1: Be sure to compare the total monthly cost in your FSU Apartment

Start with your base rent, then add any additional monthly items to find your total monthly cost:

  • Utilities (electric, water, internet/cable)
  • Parking fees
  • Valet trash, package, or amenity fees
  • Pet rent (if applicable)
  • Furniture rental (if not included)

If your current place includes parking and other options near campus are asking $100/month for parking, it might make sense to stay in your current apartment for another year!

Step 2: Measure "value" by your student lifestyle (not someone else's)

Ask yourself what you actually use. A resort-style pool is fun, but if you're paying for it and never go, that value doesn't count. Or, maybe you spent every Saturday afternoon poolside studying with your roommates. The same is true for gyms, study rooms, lounges, and shuttle access. A "worth it" apartment matches your day-to-day routine and the amenities you actually use.

Step 3: Evaluate the location in commute-minutes

In Tallahassee, distance isn't just miles — it's time. If you're close to campus or on a reliable route, you may save time and transportation costs. If you're farther out, the tradeoff should be real (lower rent, more space, quieter living, better parking, etc.).

Step 4: Audit management + maintenance like a grown-up

Price is only "worth it" if the place actually works: maintenance response time, office communication, safety basics, and how they handle issues. If you're constantly dealing with problems, that stress is part of the cost.

Step 5: Decide what would make you renew

If your renewal offer jumped, ask: what would need to be true for you to stay? Faster maintenance? Better roommate situation? Different neighborhood? Knowing your "must-haves" helps you decide quickly.
