The utility bill is really high in my FAMU apartment, any tips for lowering next month’s bill?

FAMU apartments can be a great place to live and thrive. However increasing utility bills can often put a strain on how much one thrives in their apartment. Many people actually waste a surprising amount of energy which can cause utility bills to sky rocket without people even paying much mind to where all of this energy is actually going. It doesn't have to be that way though, there are many different tips and tricks you can follow to lower your monthly utility bill without really sacrificing much in the way of your day to day life. Unless of course you're interested in a green apartment which can save you money on utility bills in the long run.

One of the most obvious first steps to take in your FAMU apartment to lower your utility bills is to turn off things when you're not using them. Whenever you leave a room, turn off the light and if there's a fan in the room consider turning that off too. TVs, stereos, and gaming systems can take up quite a bit of energy too so make sure you turn those off once leaving a room. I know how tempting it can be to leave your TV on to fall asleep to but it really just wastes energy. If you're one of those people who can't fall asleep without the TV on then check to see if your TV has a built in timer, many do and can save you energy by turning your TV off even after you've gone to sleep.

Many people don't realize this but some electronics live TVs and DVD players still use several watts of power while in standby mode (or off.) To prevent this consider investing in a few power strips and plugging your electronics into there. Once you've done that you can simply turn the power strip off when not using the electronics and you won't be wasting energy that way in your FAMU apartment.

Saving electricity is of course important but saving water can be just as important and is often times overlooked. In your FAMU apartment consider taking shorter showers, less baths, and using low-hanging showerheads to help save water. Don't ever do a load of dishes and if you live in an apartment with a washer and dryer don't do a load of laundry if you don't have a full load, this just wastes water. You may also consider air drying your dishes or your clothes to save additional energy in your FAMU apartment.

Keeping your FAMU apartment energy and water efficient doesn't have to mean a sacrifice in lifestyle choices. In fact, lowering your utility bills can be a lot easier than one would think. Little tips and tricks can go a long way when it comes to saving you money on energy and water. Even small details such as checking if doors and windows are sealed when using your heater or air conditioning can save you a decent amount of money each month. The money you save each month using these tips and tricks can go towards a savings account, or even more fun things in your budget like drinks with friends or dinner and a movie.
