We just moved into a new apartment in Tallahassee. Where can I find information on educational options and childcare for my children?

Twin Oaks
Twin Oaks at Southwood is located in southeast Tallahassee. This community offers many amenities for a family including abundant green space, basketball courts, resort-style pool, fitness center, and more.

Tallahassee offers a lot of options for a young family from non-student apartments in Tallahassee to education and childcare. Whether you are looking for public, private or anything in between things may look a little different right now due to COVID-19 but we think you will find a lot of options to choose from for your family that fit your needs.

PUBLIC SCHOOL

For public school in Tallahassee visit the Leon County Schools website to find more information including registration information, details about each individual school including public charter schools, and magnet programs available in the district. Per the emergency order from the Florida Department of Education, parents will continue to have a choice in the spring of 2021 on whether they want their children to attend school in person or one of the digital options available such as Leon County Virtual School.

VIRTUAL SCHOOL

Whether you are looking into public or private most schools right now also offer a virtual option along with a brick and mortar (in person) option. As mentioned above the Leon County public schools offer the Leon County Virtual School as their option and there is also Florida Virtual School (FLVS). Florida Virtual School offers full-time and a flex option for those that want to take extra classes or explore different courses even if they attend another public or private school. Some families may also be interested in a traditional homeschool option. For homeschool or other virtual school options visit the Fun 4 Tally Kids website.

PRIVATE SCHOOL

For private schools around your Tallahassee apartment, we again recommend Fun 4 Tally Kids website for a great starting place. You can view private school options that are faith-based and non-faith based. Many private schools offer their own scholarships to cover tuition costs or visit Step Up for Students for more scholarship options including options based on income, if your child has special needs or has been bullied or trouble reading.

CHILDCARE & PRE-KINDERGARTEN

In Florida, we have VPK (voluntary pre-kindergarten) if your child is four years old which is FREE, and prepares the child for elementary school and beyond. For more information on the VPK program contact the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend Region. For other childcare options, Fun 4 Tally Kids website is a great resource. They offer options for in-home childcare and preschools that are faith-based and non-faith based.

Every child and family differ on what they are looking for in education and childcare. To some location is the most important factor whether it is close to the best apartments in Tallahassee or you may prefer a close distance to your job or to some a special program that follows your child's interest will make the decision. Your neighbors at your apartment in Tallahassee and word of mouth may be a great resource also. If you have a community fitness center or pool to meet your neighbors that may be beneficial in your search. Welcome to the Tallahassee area, we hope this list gives you a good starting point to find childcare and school options for your family.
