What are some cheap ways to decorate my FSU apartment?

When moving into your Florida State University apartment, decorating your space may be at the top of your list or it may not even be on your list of things to do. Being a college student isn't cheap and if decorating your apartment isn't high on your priority list, you may want to look for different ways to save money, while still making your space feel comfortable and cute. Here's some tips for decorating your space while spending the least amount of money.

Collaborate With Your Roommates

If you have roommates in your FSU apartment, ask them to help you decorate the common spaces. It should be a place that all of you can share and feel comfortable in, so everyone should have a say in what goes into it. Talk to your roommates and see if they have any items, they will be putting in the shared spaces. This way you know what you don't have to buy. You can even divide up the shared spaces equally and split the decorating that way. Now, you don't have to spend your money decorating the entire apartment, just your personal space and your part of the shared space.

Thrift Shops

There are a bunch of thrift shops located near your FSU apartment with everything you think you could need to furnish and decorate your space. Just because something isn't brand new doesn't mean that you can utilize it. I think it's fair to assume that we've all been to a Goodwill in our hometowns, and I can bet there's one near your apartment. Goodwill is a great place to find little trinkets for your kitchen all the way to a couch to furnish your space. (Hopefully you have an elevator in your apartment if you're bringing in a couch.) If you want to shop at some more locally owned thrift shops, stop at City Walk Urban Mission. This thrift shop helps fund an outreach center for unhoused people in Tallahassee.

DIY

If you have a furnished apartment near FSU, DIY-ing some decorations may be the best cheap way to decorate. Since you don't need any furniture, you can focus on making some decorations that will make your Florida State University apartment as comfortable and cute as you would like. You can take your super basic throw pillows to the next level by embellishing them with some fabric flowers. All you need is a throw pillow, fabric, scissors, thread, and a needle and you can DIY some pillows that can match your room while not breaking the bank. If sewing fabric to a pillow isn't your speed, you could make some DIY artwork with your roommates. Not only is this a cheap way to decorate, but it's also a great way to get to know your roommates.

Utilize Online Resellers

If you have an idea for how you want to decorate but just don't have the funds to execute it exactly the way you want, turn to online resellers. Through platforms like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist, people are able to sell their gently used items to other people in their community. This way you can search up exactly what you're looking for and find items in your area that match your search. You can find some awesome deals on these sites, including people giving away their items for free. Just make sure to stay safe by always meeting in a public place and bringing some friends along with you. Maybe you'll even buy something from another Florida State University student.
