Forwarding Mail to Your Tallahassee Apartment

Amidst boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap it can be easy to forget about one of the most important steps in the moving process – updating your address! Luckily, changing your address with the U.S. Post Office is a very easy and straightforward process. While this step only takes a few minutes there are a few other updates you may want to prioritize so you don’t miss things like coupons to your favorite stores, your monthly phone bill, a birthday card from your aunt, or your pet’s BarkBox subscription.

Updating Your Forwarding Address

By updating your address with USPS, you can rest easy knowing that none of your mail will get lost in the shuffle. The post office will forward any mail that goes to your old apartment to your new Tallahassee apartment. You can complete the process online, by mail or in-person at your local post office. If you wish to do it online, visit the USPS website here. Note: there is a $1 fee for online address changes, to verify your new information is not fraudulent. It is recommended by the post office that you file your address change at least two weeks prior to your move. You’ll receive a confirmation by email or mail once the process is complete.

Updating Your Address with Other Parties

While the forwarding process is incredibly helpful, it’s not a long-term solution. The post office only forwards your mail for a limited amount of time so it’s your responsibility to update your address with family members, friends and any pertinent companies/organizations. Here is a brief checklist of individuals and companies you should confirm your new address with:

  • Family members & friends
  • Banking Institutions
  • Utilities (electric, phone and internet)
  • Subscriptions to magazines or online retailers
  • Current Employer (and previous employers, if sending you a W-2 for tax season)
  • Physician and pharmacy
  • Schools (yours or your children’s)
  • Children’s activities (day care, sports, dance, etc.)
  • Insurance providers (renters, health and life)
  • Online shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay, etc.)
  • Phone company
